“To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always.” - Hippocrates
Dr Goobie was a neurosurgeon. Educated, well remunerated and respected. Yet he continued to face dissatisfaction with the work he was doing. The surgeries he was performing were not addressing what he understood to be the root cause of the issue. Since his days as a medical student he'd always hoped to relieve suffering and yet in his clinical practice he didn't always feel like he was doing so. Naturally, this would create an internal conflict in most of us. Yet, how we responded to this feeling is what might differ between us. Dr Goobie's reflection on his ethical dilemma certainly encouraged me to think about how I may respond in a similar situation. I hope it encourages you to think about that too.
