Medicine didn't always feel like my true calling, and for a long time I could never understand why. On paper, it made perfect sense, but logic alone was never enough. I had begun to realise that what I was missing was something more tangible: a purpose, a mission that could be distilled into a single sentence. Helping people was a worthy ambition, but it left me asking: who, how, and where?

This inaugural lecture by Professor Andrew Bastawrous provided many of those missing pieces. Long before watching it, I knew I was fascinated by the determinants of health and disease at a population level. That curiosity led me to interrupt my medical studies to pursue an MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. I also knew that I wanted my medical training to have the greatest possible impact, particularly in settings where need was greatest. What I lacked was a way to bring these ambitions together into a coherent mission. This lecture helped me do exactly that.
